The Magic Five and Dime: a Tarot Mystery by Steve Hockensmith and Lisa Falco was such a fun and meaningful read. I went into it expecting a story with tarot, but I left thinking about family, betrayal, healing, and how understanding our past can change the way we see ourselves.
Alanis was easily my favorite character. I found myself relating to her journey and rooting for her every step of the way. And when the truth about who did it was finally revealed… I definitely didn’t see that coming!
I also loved how tarot was woven into the story. It never felt like a lesson or a guidebook, it felt symbolic, natural, and part of the characters’ journey. If you’re tarot-curious but intimidated by learning the cards, this book is a beautiful reminder that stories can teach us just as much as guidebooks.
My only complaint? I wanted more. The ending left me wishing there were a sequel because I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to these characters.
If you love magical realism, family secrets, healing, and want to experience tarot through storytelling rather than instruction, I’d absolutely recommend The Magic Five and Dime.

Reading The White Magic Five and Dime left me with a few journal prompts that I haven’t stopped thinking about. If you’ve read the book, or even if these questions simply speak to you, I invite you to sit with them:
✨ If you could uncover one hidden truth from your family’s past, would you want to know it? Why or why not?
✨ How has understanding your past helped you heal or see yourself differently?
✨ What story have you inherited that you’re still learning to rewrite?
I’d love to hear your reflections in the comments. Sometimes the stories we carry reveal just as much about who we’re becoming as they do about where we’ve been.
